The upper peninsula is home to many attractions, including the Red Hat Convention.
The Red Hat's are older women who just get together and have fun. You have to be a certain age to wear a Red Hat, but until you are of age you are asked to wear a pink hat! To find out more about the Red Hat Society, go to their official website.
During the fall months there's the beautiful Color Tour, where you are led throughout the upper peninsula to experience the beauty of fall colors. USA Today says that the tour along US 2 is rated one of the top ten best color tours in the nation.
The Mystery Spot is the famed 'tourist trap'. The location of the mystery spot defies gravity. You can tilt back on a chair, with nothing to hold onto, and never fall backwards! It's mistified visitors for years. And best of all, it's so close to Silver Sands, there isn't too much of a drive!The Oswald Bear ranch is a long drive, but it's worth it! You get to see real bears in the wild! This ranch is not a drive through, it's a walk about, so come with tennis shoes! There is a souvenir shop as well. They have RV parking, and have gear available if it rains. You have to remember the times, you don't want to drive out there and see they're closed! Times are from 10 AM to 6 PM, open from Memorial Day Weekend 'till September 30th.
Climb to the top of Castle Rock and see a wonderful view of the Upper Peninsula. It is a bit of a climb, but the view is completely worth it.Mackinaw City is just over the bridge from St. Igance. It has ferrys out to Mackinaw Island, a wonderful shopping area, as well as hotels. There's a movie theatre showing movies all day. You can even make your own teddy bear at the Teddy Bear Factory! If you're a Lord of the Rings fan, you'll love looking around Enchanted Knights, a shop full of all things magic. Mackinaw City has many restaurants and other shops. There's a Canada store, which sells Canadian souvenirs and items.
The St. Ignace Deer Ranch is just across the street from Silver Sands! There's almost no driving! Enjoy watching deer in their natural habitat. You can even feed the deer! The deer ranch also has a souvenir shop.
Clyde's Hamburgers has got to be the restaurant in St. Ignace. It's been around for quite awhile. The waiter or waitress will come out to your car and take your order. Feel free to stick around and eat inside your car! Clyde's has a 1950's look to it. Their burgers are gigantic! You'll love it, and so will the kids. Their kid's meals come in a fun carrier: a cardboard 1950's car!
Mackinaw Island is home to the Grand Hotel, the beautiful and very much fancy hotel. The movie Somewhere In Time starring the late Christopher Reeve and the beautiful Jane Seymour in a classic tale of romance. This movie is a must see! There are formal dinners at the Grand, and you do not have to be a guest to attend them. You do, however, have to dress in formal wear. Men, wear ties and women, wear your dresses. The food is very good, and the rooms are beautiful! There's even an arcade and a gift shop, and a theatre at the Grand. There's a smaller theatre inside the hotel, sometimes they show Somewhere In Time. It's expensive, but so worth it. The DeTour Passage Historical Museum displays things from the early years of DeTour. There's Native American displays, old government documents, schools, churches and businesses. A must see for all history lovers. It features the Fresnel, a historic lens taken from the DeTour Lighthouse.
Colonial Michilimackinac features authentically restored buildings, musket and cannon demonstrations and a Native American encampment ground. Also has an underground archeaological exhibit.
Fort Mackinac, a British built fort, has been used as a sentinel in the Straits for 115 years.
Crisp Point Lighthouse was built between 1903 and 1904. Features a lifesaving station and quarters, a barn, boathouse, lighthouse tower and serviceroom.
Father Marquette National Memorial & Museum overlooks the Straits of Mackinac. This memorial & 15 station interpretive trail covers the life of 17th century French missionary Jacques Marquette.
Drummond Island Historical Museum is, of course, located on Drummond Island. Take a short ferry ride over there to the museum with hands-on exhibits detailing the history of early settlers with Native American & Finnish artifacts.
The Fort deBaude Indian Museum covers the pre-contact period, early French, English and American periods with over 6,700 square feet of exhibit space.
Garlyn Zoological park features various animals in a park-like setting.
Engadine Historical Museum reflects the life in the Engadine community dating all the way back to 1894. They focus on the lumbering and agricultural eras of the community.
Historic Mill Creek is one of the first industrial sites of the Great Lakes, providing sawn lumber for Mackinac Island in the 1790;s.
Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum displays artifacts of the ships and sailors that were lost in the waters of Superior.
Luce County Historical Museum was constructed in 1894, originally as a sheriff's residence and jail. The building still has it's original cells, kitchen, dining room and bedrooms.
Mackinac Island Butterfly House allows visitors to walk through a greenhouse filled with over 500 butterflies from all over the world. There're some very beautiful butterflies in there. Some even land on you!
The Museum of Ojibwa Culture allows visitors to experience how the Ojibwa and Huron Native Ameircans, as well as the French, lived in the Straits 300+ years ago.
The Museum Ship Valley Camp features 3 levels of lake freighter filled with crew's quarters, a galley, pilothouse, steam engine and cargo holds.
The River of History Museum features an interpretation of 8,000 years of the history of the St. Mary's River Valley, from glacial origins to Native American occupation.
The Soo Locks consist of 4 locks, has a visitor's center containing a working model of the locks as well as a film on the operation of these locks.
The Tower of History is a 210' concrete tower, with an express elevator, that shows a view of 15 to 25 miles over the historic grounds of Sault Ste. Marie, MI.
The Wheels of History Museum consists of artifacts and photos of early railroads, telephones and other things relating to the Brimley area.
Whitefish Point Light Station was first lit in 1849, one of the first lights on Lake Superior. This light shares honors with Cooper Harbor for being just that.
The Les Cheneaux Maritime Museum is an old 1920's O.M. Reif Boathouse that features vintage boats, marine artifacts, antique outboard motors and historic photos of area boating.
The beautiful Mackinac Bridge connects the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan. The bridge is boasted as the longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere. Viewing the bridge at night is simply beautiful, for the bridge is all lit up. It's especially beautiful at night during lightning storms, not that we recommend sitting outside in a lightning storm.
Mackinac Bridge Museum honors the lives of 5 men who gave their life during the constuction of the bridge. The museum displays some of the original equipment used to build the wonderful bridge.
Totem Village offers a wildlife zoo, autentic artifacts of the upper peninsula, many hand-carved totem poles and a life-size trading post.
Kinross Heritage Park displays pioneer farming, logging and household artifacts, along with a shoe repair shop and a blacksmith.
Tahquamenon Logging Museum (in Newberry) features complexes of several historic buildings, a visitor's center, nature trail and a boardwalk.
